The REAL Power Of A Network

The REAL Power Of A Network Last week something amazing happened. This story does not describe a job search but it does show how powerful a network can be. Last week I was on a chat session with two buddies, Matthew Reinbold and Phil Burns (aka, Phil801), talking about Seth Godins Dip tour. The question was can we get $25,000 together by Monday (today)? If we could pull it off then Seth would come to Salt Lake City to speak. (if you dont know who Seth Godin is you can read a terrific story on his blog here: Purple Cow Redux) The task seemed insurmountable how could we get 500 people to commit to $50 in the next few days? I think I have an excellent network but Id say that over 70% of my network is not local. And local is critical for this task. I wasnt sure what kind of network Phil801 and Matthew had and realized that the ONLY way to get 500 people to commit would be through word-of-mouth. I supported the idea and voted lets do it! while also saying that I was super-swamped with some big deadlines and would not be able to give this much time/effort. But I pledged and did what I could, and then started seeing the magic come through. Phil and Matthew immediately tapped into their networks, and pulled together a Street Team of people that are basically making this happen. Its amazing and significant for two reasons: Each of the people on the street team have valuable skills to contribute. We have web programmers, graphics designers, blog experts, PR experts, marketing experts, and people that are doing cold-calls for corporate sponsors. If we had to pay for the expertise (or leg-work) wed easily be over ten thousand bucks in the red but we got top-notch expertise because of the network. Each person on the street team has their own amazing network. When all of these networks are tied together we have a power-network that covers the regional area (spanning multiple counties). Im sure any marketing or PR firm would love to have the reach (and exposure) that we got in just a few days it really is amazing! The results so far just might be enough to make this happen. Are we going to get 500 people pledged by the end of today? Well, we need about 300 more pledges (if you are in Utah or close enough to want to see Seth Godin speak please pledge here) but one of the brainstorm sessions produced a brilliant idea: corporate sponsors. The sponsorship level that we are seeing is equal to about 50 pledges and our Street Team has great connections and has been on the phone for a few days contacting and pitching the sponsorship. Its been an amazing ride, and I think were all impressed with the amount of progress that weve seen over the last few days. Lets tie this back to your personal career management. The key is that the networks were already established before the need, and now we could just tap into our networks. And thats how it ties back to career management, or a job search build your network NOW, when you DONT need it. Nurture your network. Have a strong personal brand in place so you dont have to remind people who you are when you call on them. Hard to do in your head? Thats why you need to signup for a free account with JibberJobber. How Going Back to Grad School Can Help you Land a Job

How Going Back to Grad School Can Help you Land a Job Although the past two years of my life have been a whirlwind, I am very happy that I made the choice to continue my education. One of the main reasons I have enjoyed going back to grad school is that it has helped me figure out what I want to do with my life. I have found that although I currently have a job I love, I am now performing even better and also finding new opportunities that better match my interests and skills. [Related Post:  Deciding to Go to Grad School? 8 Steps to Completing the Application] Here are my top 10 reasons why going back to grad school can help you in your job search: 1. Networking: By heading back to school, you can meet employees of companies where you want to work. Often other employees know of jobs that are available that havent even been advertised yet. I have referred two of my classmates to my company since I started school. By working with them on group projects, I knew they would make great teammates and this made me comfortable referring them. 2. Promotions: I was surprised by how quickly I was promoted in my current company after a year in school. My management noticed how hard I was working and rewarded me for it. 3. JOBS: If you lose or leave your job during school, most likely you will have access to a great career services office that will help you get placed in another job ASAP. The last two years that I have been in school have been very rough economic times and almost half of my class lost their jobs since we started. Fortunately, my classmates were able to quickly find new jobs thanks to our career services office. 4. Career Advisors: Most schools have career advisors that can help you with your resume, give you interview advice and provide you with an evaluation of your personality to see what career will be best for you. Many schools also provide career seminars where Human Resources Executives provide insights into what employers are looking for. 5. Connections: Your professors are very valuable connections. Usually, they are passionate about helping students succeed and wont hesitate to connect you with their network if you ask. 6. Informational Interviews: Grad school is a great time to do informational interviews. If you call someone up and say that you are a student, most people are happy to answer your questions. It is amazing what doors will open just by saying that you are a student. [Related Post:  15 Questions To Ask During Informational Interviews] 7. Events: My school holds some type of networking event every day and these events are so important to take advantage of. My favorite event at my school is meeting with my business mentor. 8. Passion: Grad school gives you the opportunity to find out what you are passionate about. You can take advantage of trying new classes and find interests that you never knew you had. These classes can also help you learn exactly what you dont want to do. 9. Salary negotiation: Not only can grad school help you land a job, but it can also help you learn how to negotiate a great salary. I have found that salary negotiation is rarely spoken about in the corporate world so I definitely enjoyed hearing these tips in grad school! 10. Ability and Determination: The most important benefit of heading back to school is that when Hiring Managers see that you finished grad school, they know you can multitask and succeed in a job with large responsibilities. Everyone knows that juggling school, family, and work is not easy so this is where you can quickly score a big thumbs up! Did going back to grad school help you land a job?

Heres how to get a spa therapist job onboard a luxury yacht

Heres how to get a spa therapist job onboard a luxury yacht An expert shares how you can get a spa therapist job onboard a luxury yacht Spa therapist jobs onboard the world’s most luxurious superyachts are highly coveted, and for good reason too. Indeed, not only do you get to work amidst luxurious surroundings, but you also have the opportunity to travel to some of the world’s most stunning destinations, thanks to exciting itineraries that could see you working in the blue-water havens of the Mediterranean one month, to traversing the ice-filled waters of Antarctica the following. Yachts are increasingly expanding in size, offering an ever-growing roster of luxurious state-of-the-art amenities. A recent trend towards wellness has seen a growing demand for spa therapists on superyachts with luxurious spas and wellness centres now becoming di rigueur. Louise Overend of YPI CREW recruits yacht crew for some of the world’s most exclusive mega yachts. Here she explains how you can get a coveted yacht spa therapist job. What qualifications do you need to apply for a spa therapist job onboard a yacht? “In order to get a spa therapist job onboard a yacht, you will need to have a recognised spa therapist qualification. Applicants will also need to have completed the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping course, often referred to as the STCW. This course covers basic safety training required by all seafarers who are working onboard commercial ships or superyachts. Applicants will also need a valid seafarers medical fitness certificate, such as an ENG1 or equivalent, which shows that they are fit to work on a seagoing vessel and perform duties at sea. “Ideally you will also have some sea-based spa experience, such as working on a cruise ship, but you can also be considered if you only have land-based experience. Yacht spas are some of the most luxurious in the world, so you will be confident working to an extremely high standard, providing five-star service. You will also be knowledgeable on all the latest spa treatments and trends. At YPI CREW we also regularly recruit for private massage therapist jobs, an ideal role if you are a highly skilled masseuse.” What are some of the benefits of working on a superyacht? “As a spa therapist on a superyacht you will get to work with some of the very best products in the industry, whilst also offering sumptuous treatments limited only by the imagination. Many yacht crew don’t have to pay tax, including UK residents, making a spa therapist job onboard a luxury yacht a great way to save.” How can people progress their career whilst working on a superyacht? “Most people will start-off applying for an entry level spa therapist job onboard a yacht where they will likely have to help with other housekeeping duties whilst the spa is not in use. These roles are typically on smaller yachts. As they progress through their career and gain more experience, yacht spa therapists will have the opportunity to work on much larger yachts where they will likely be one of a dedicated team of spa therapists. These yachts will employ a spa manager to oversee a team of spa therapists and the smooth running of the spa.” What are some of the challenges of a spa therapist job onboard a yacht? “While some of the world’s luxury superyachts dedicate a large area to an entire wellness centre, smaller yachts often have limited space, often with room for just a table. So, when applying for a spa therapist job onboard a yacht you will need to be someone who is highly adaptable. Many of the spa therapists on smaller yachts will act in a more mobile capacity, offering treatments to guests in their rooms. Additionally, as your location is never static, yacht spa therapists often adjust their treatments to their surroundings. For example, you may offer treatments designed to treat overexposure to the sun when in a sunny destination, alternatively, if you are cruising around the Atlantic, you may offer a treatment designed to nourish and rehydrate skin that has become dry due to the cold climate.” What character traits do you need to successfully apply for a spa therapist job onboard a yacht? “As mentioned above, you need to be highly adaptable to adjust to your surroundings. In addition to this you also need to excel in customer service, have an encyclopaedic knowledge of the latest treatments and trends in wellness, and be able to handle the most demanding of clients. Ultimately the attention to clients and excellent treatment experience is exactly the same on a yacht as it is in a luxurious land-based spa. Additionally you will need to be a team player and an energetic professional who is able to stay calm in stressful situations.” How much does a spa therapist job onboard a yacht pay? “A base salary for entry level yacht spa therapist jobs is typically around 3,500 euro per month. Spa therapists working on yacht charters can expect to earn around 3,000 euro per month, however they will also get an equal share of charter tips. Whether you have applied for a spa therapist job onboard a yacht that is private or charter, the role will include return flights, medical insurance, accommodation onboard in a shared cabin, toiletries, and all food cooked by the yacht’s private chef.” Finally, how can people go about finding a spa therapist job onboard a yacht? “A job seeker looking for a spa therapist job onboard a yacht or private massage therapist jobs should start their search by registering with a reputable yacht crew agency such as YPI CREW. We source and recruit the best yacht crews from across the world and have built a reputation as the leading expert in yacht crew recruitment.”

Seeing Our Work in Context Marla Gottschalk

Seeing Our Work in Context Marla Gottschalk Photo by Keilidh Ewan on Unsplash Context is important for both people and organizations. None of us are allowed to move forever through the universe with a myopic vantage point. This strategy eventually fails â€" as the broader perspective overtakes us. One of the most difficult challenges is to see ourselves (and our actions at work) in context. This is a real problem established environments. We can become distracted from our true mission by long-standing biases and mantras, including “this is the way it’s always done”. When organizations reach this point, functions often express that they cannot work together. To be certain, there is myopia operating. Groups are too close to their own work to see how it affects neighboring functions. Or they simply don’t have the time or inclination to examine what might really be happening. We often think of clients or customers, but rarely think of how we affect our peers. Most of us do not fully understand the demands placed on the roles that touch our own. If we took the time to do this â€" we might see our own actions in context. Silos hurt all of us. Start in the right direction. Great things can follow. Her thoughts on work life have appeared in various outlets including Talent Zoo, Forbes, Quartz and The Huffington Post.

Writing a Cover Letter Resume Format

Writing a Cover Letter Resume FormatWriting a cover letter resumes format isn't that hard, but you need to know what format it should be in. There are two main types of letter writing that you can do, which are formal and informal.Formal letters include thank yous, job offers, and letters of recommendation. The best part about using these is they will have your full name, address, and phone number on them. Formal letters are considered a real professional gesture and show that you have taken the time to craft an interesting letter. Most people write a formal letter for many reasons, not just to appear professionally. Even if you don't intend to use it again, when you get a thank you or resume, it shows you took the time to prepare well. However, using a formal letter is not always necessary. In fact, it isn't always a good idea for a resume or even a thank you letter. First of all, a formal letter will show that you took the time to craft a letter and that you put some thought into it. Secondly, it takes a lot of time to write a formal letter and some people find it difficult to write this type of letter. If you don't want to put in the time to craft a formal letter, there are plenty of things you can do to save time. Start by choosing one specific topic to focus on. This means if you really want to talk about your great skills, look for something that is related to what you are offering. Then write about this topic, remembering that it is top priority to you, or why you are writing the letter. When you get ready to write the letter, use the 'Why' question to get the most out of your words. This technique also applies to formal letters. The most important thing to remember when writing a cover letter resume format is to keep it short. A traditional resume has space to only a few sentences. This makes it hard to skim over, and this is no way to grab a reader's attention. Finally, always make sure you spell check your letter. This not only makes the reading easier, but it also makes it less likely for someone to miss the points you are trying to make. Good luck with your letter writing!

How To Win More Career Opportunities

How To Win More Career Opportunities Do you ever feel frustrated that you’re not getting the opportunities you think you should? Well, that used to happen to me. For example, there would be some cool projects and “Wonder Boy” or “Wonder Girl” would get assigned to them again and not me. Or, there would be a new role and I would read about it in the announcement memo. I wouldn’t even know it was open. These situations were just soul-destroying to me, and it was this cycle of silent suffering because I’d be thinking, “Oh, please pick me, pick me!”, I would be disappointed and then I would console myself by saying, “Well, I didn’t really want that anyway”, when of course I really did want that! Sometimes you can’t do anything. But what I’ve discovered over the years is, most of the time, there are things you can do to put yourself out there in front of opportunities. This was illustrated to me this morning when my husband, who is a basketball coach, was talking to some of his players. They were talking about how frustrating it can be as a player when people don’t pass you the ball. One of the girls said, “Well, if you don’t work to get open then I am not going to pass you the ball. Every player should have different ways of getting open.” I thought: this applies off the basketball court as well. It applies to all of us in our careers, in our work. That’s why I want to share with you five ways you can get open for opportunities. 1. Tell them you want the ball When there is an opportunity, throw your hat in the ring. You don’t have to wait to be asked. So it might sound something like this: “Hey, I’d like to be considered for this role. Here is why I think I’m a good fit.” 2. Ask for advice This is more subtle than the first strategy and it works when there is not an open opportunity out there. So, you can go to someone senior and say, “I’d love to get your advice on how I can get in a position to be able to run a global group one day” and then you’ll learn all kinds of things from them. 3. Pick yourself I love this. How energizing! What I mean is, you can’t pick yourself for a formal opportunity that someone else has the option to hand out, but you can pick yourself for an opportunity to show the same capabilities that it would take to do that thing that you want to do in the future. For example, if you wanted to show that you can lead a team, but you don’t have an opportunity to do that right now, then you can go out and lead an effort in the charity sphere. Or lead an effort in the recruiting arena or in diversity in some of the networks. So go out there and create a project and pick yourself to lead it. 4. Do the work When I say, “Do the work”, what I mean is, using the basketball context, if you want somebody to pass you the ball then it really helps if they feel confident that, when you get the ball, you’re going to be able to score; you’re going to be able to convert that. So in basketball, you’d be at practice every day. Get 500 baskets in. Maybe even 1000. Then people will see that you’re doing that and feel confident to pass you the ball, or give you that opportunity in the work context more readily. 5. Learn from others Identify one or two people who are really good at this, people who seem to be finding those opportunities regularly, and observe what they do. What is it about them, their actions and mindset that gets them those opportunities? In fact, take them out for a coffee, interview them. People love talking about their successes. Ask them, “How did you get all of those great opportunities in your career?” Be proactive to gain more exposure and visibility So those are just five things you can do to put yourself out there and get open for opportunities. When you’re feeling frustrated about not having enough opportunities, I want you to go out there and do one of these things, do two of these things, do all of these things! But the most important thing is go and do something. Don’t do what I did, which is that cycle of silent suffering. Go and be proactive. Take action. You’re going to feel more confident. It’s also going to give you more exposure and visibility, and good things will come your way. Now I’d like to hear from you: What have you done that has helped you get in front of opportunities, and get open for opportunities? Leave a comment below â€" I’d love to hear your stories.
